Yard cleanup in Voorhees.

Voorhees has room for both a backyard routine and a trip to the dog run. Connolly Park on Centennial Boulevard is one of the township's places to enjoy time outside with a dog, with separate enclosed runs for large and small dogs. Back at home, NJ Scatman handles recurring or one-time yard cleanup in the confirmed Voorhees service area, ZIP 08043.

Township history gives Voorhees a different story from its neighboring towns. It became a separate municipality in 1899, having previously been part of Waterford Township. Today, the township identifies its area as 11.6 square miles. Send your ZIP code and yard details so we can confirm availability, your price and schedule directly.

Choose weekly, every-other-week or twice-weekly visits, or ask about a one-time cleanup. We let you know when we're on the way and send a picture of your closed gate when we leave. A scheduled yard visit is separate from your responsibility to pick up after your dog on a walk or at the park. Voorhees' own code requires immediate disposal on property you do not own or possess.

Outside with your dog in Voorhees

Connolly Park's two dog runs

The township describes two enclosed dog runs at Connolly Park: one for large dogs and one for small dogs. Water fountains and waste-bag dispensers are nearby, and picnic tables and benches were added inside each run in 2022. Keep your dog leashed and under control on the way to and from the runs. The township's guidance permits dogs to run free inside the gated dog park with their owner, not throughout the rest of the park. Check the township's latest notices before heading out, because an event or maintenance work can change access.

A walk around Centennial Boulevard's park

Connolly Park covers 49 acres and includes a half-mile lighted walking and jogging track, two picnic pavilions and a gazebo. The township acquired the park in 2001. Its published dog-run guidance gives hours as dawn to dusk. Bring your own bags rather than depending on a dispenser being stocked, keep paths clear and carry collected waste to an appropriate receptacle. The dog runs are the designated off-leash spaces, not a reason to let a dog roam the track.

More walking paths in Voorhees

The township's parks column describes more places to walk. Kirkwood Park on Laurel Oak Road has a paved walking path beside the 14-acre Kirkwood Forest, which the township preserved. John Hale, Sr. Memorial Park on West End Avenue, in the Ashland section, connects to Ashland Woods, a 20-acre preserved forest. The open-space half of the 140-acre Stafford Farm carries the Stafford stagecoach walking trail. Check each park's posted rules before bringing a dog; outside the gated runs, the township says dogs may not run free anywhere.

Local pickup rules

Voorhees Code §92.30

Section 92.30(C) requires pet owners and keepers to immediately and properly dispose of waste deposited on public or private property they do not own or possess. The code defines immediate as removal at once, without delay. Its definition of proper disposal includes a designated or suitable receptacle followed by a refuse container regularly emptied by a collector. The section includes an exemption for a disability assistance animal while being used for that purpose. Read the linked code for the full wording; this is a practical summary, not legal advice.

Leash and control, §92.21 and §92.22

The township's dog-run guide summarizes two more sections of Chapter 92. Section 92.21 says no dog or cat may run at large, and §92.22 requires an owner to be able to control a leashed dog. The township adds that dogs may run free only inside the gated dog parks, with their owner present. To report a dog or cat roaming unattended, the township lists the police non-emergency number, (856) 428-5400, or 911 if the animal seems dangerous.

Licensing a Voorhees dog or cat

The Township Clerk's page says anyone who owns, feeds, keeps or harbors a dog or cat in Voorhees for more than 10 days needs a license. Licenses expire December 31 and should be renewed by January 31, and a late fee applies to licenses renewed after May 10. A dog's rabies vaccination must not expire before November 1 of the licensing year. The township holds a free rabies clinic on the first Saturday in May, and licenses can also be bought online. Check the clerk's page for current fees.

A yard service is not a park pickup service

An upcoming cleanup at your house does not cover a mess left on the way to Connolly Park, beside a path or on someone else's lawn. Carry bags before you leave home and remove waste when it happens. Keep the distinction clear when choosing a recurring plan: NJ Scatman's schedule concerns your yard, while the township rule concerns immediate pickup on property you do not own or possess.

Cooper River and Barton Run

Kresson-Gibbsboro Road divides the township's drainage. The 2005 Municipal Stormwater Management Plan says tributaries north of that road flow to the Cooper River, while the Barton Run watershed south of it drains toward the southwest branch of the Rancocas. Barton Run's main tributaries start at Sunshine Park Lake in Lake Villa, and the stream links a series of lakes between Cooper Road and Route 73; the plan's description of that area names Cedar Lake and Lions Lake, where the township has a park. The township's 2019 outfall map also labels the North Branch Cooper River and Woodcrest Creek. The 2005 plan describes the stream corridor draining to the Cooper River as degraded, with impaired water quality. Waste left on a lawn or sidewalk can wash toward these streams, so bag it and put it in the trash.

A little Voorhees history

Before the township

The township's history names the Lenni-Lenape as the area's first residents. The same page explains the name: Voor is a Dutch prefix meaning in front of, and Hees was a village near Ruinen, in Drenthe, Holland.

1899: a township of its own

An older name for Route 561

The township's history identifies Haddonfield-Berlin Road, Route 561, as the road historically called Long-A-Coming Road. Old photographs on the same page show Kirkwood Lake around 1930, Glendale Church on Haddonfield-Berlin Road and the Ashland School in the 1940s.

1980 to 2020: rapid growth

The township's 2005 stormwater plan records population growth from 12,919 in 1980 to 24,559 in 1990 and 28,126 in 2000, with 4,776 new residential units built in the 1980s alone. The township's history page gives the 2020 census population as 31,069.

2001 and 2004: parks preserved

The township acquired the 49-acre Connolly Park in 2001. In 2004 it acquired the 140-acre Stafford Farm in partnership with the county and state, keeping half as open space. The farm half is now Saddlehill Winery & Vineyards, which held its grand opening on April 10, 2024.
